Position Summary
Behavioral Health Clinicians at Avela Health provide direct telehealth services to autistic and neurodivergent children, adolescents, and families. Clinicians work within Avela’s neurodiversity-affirming framework to support meaningful goals related to communication, behavior, emotional well-being, and family relationships. Care is flexible, collaborative, and responsive to each child and family’s context, preferences, and strengths.
Clinicians may serve in one or more of the following focus areas:
Early Childhood
Support parents and caregivers of autistic children under age 6 in building connection, communication, and play within everyday routines. Interventions are parent-mediated, naturalistic, and grounded in developmental-behavioral principles that promote joy and engagement.
Focus Areas May Include:
- Communication and play development
- Increasing engagement and interaction
- Supporting transitions and daily routines
- Reducing family stress and enhancing parent confidence
Adolescents & Teens
Provide therapy to autistic and neurodivergent youth focused on understanding emotions, managing anxiety or depression, and building self-awareness, flexibility, and coping skills. Therapy may draw from CBT, ACT, or related approaches, adapted for neurodivergent communication and learning styles.
Focus Areas May Include:
- Anxiety, depression, or stress management
- Emotion regulation and coping
- Social and family relationships
- Identity, values, and self-advocacy
- School consultation and collaboration
Children & Teens with Co-Occurring IDD
Partner with families of children and teens who experience both autism and intellectual or developmental disabilities. Clinicians emphasize practical strategies that build communication, adaptive skills, and participation across environments, while supporting caregivers in preventing and responding to challenging behavior.
Focus Areas May Include:
- Communication and functional skills
- Participation in home, school, and community
- Behavior support and collaborative problem-solving
- Family and caregiver well-being
- School consultation and collaboration
Adults
The Behavioral Health Clinician provides tailored intervention and support to autistic adults using an evidence-based framework that addresses common challenges such as anxiety, depression, emotion regulation, and interpersonal stress as well as co-occurring conditions such as obsessive compulsive disorder.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver CBT-informed telehealth therapy to autistic adults via a neurodiversity-informed lens.
- Incorporate psychoeducation, skill-building, and values exploration into sessions.
- Maintain accurate documentation and contribute to program evaluation and outcomes tracking.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide individualized, evidence-based telehealth services within Avela’s neurodiversity-affirming framework.
- Collaborate with families to identify meaningful goals and design supports aligned with their priorities.
- Document sessions, progress, and outcomes consistent with clinical and research standards.
- Participate in case consultation, supervision, and professional learning.
- Contribute to quality improvement and program development initiatives.
Qualifications
Experience by Focus Area
- Early Childhood: Experience with parent coaching, early communication and play development, naturalistic developmental-behavioral interventions, and background in early child development including autistic development.
- Adolescents & Teens: Training or experience in CBT, ACT, or related approaches for anxiety, depression, emotion regulation, and identity development, along with a deep understanding of the autistic experience and the ability to deliver interventions in ways that affirm neurodivergent ways of thinking, feeling, and communicating rather than approaches designed for allistic individuals.
- Children & Teens with Co-Occurring IDD: Experience supporting children with complex communication and support needs, building meaningful participation and autonomy, and collaborating with caregivers to strengthen family well-being. Requires understanding of the autistic experience and the ability to design supports that are compassionate, individualized, and not modeled on compliance- or normalization-based practices.
Required Qualifications Across Areas
- Master’s or doctoral degree in psychology, social work, counseling, behavior analysis, or related field.
- Licensed in at least one state and license eligible in the United States (e.g., BCBA, LCSW, LMHC, LMFT, Licensed Psychologist).
- Experience supporting autistic or neurodivergent individuals and families.
- Strong communication and telehealth skills.
- Commitment to neurodiversity-affirming, collaborative, and family-centered practice.
