Psychiatrist (Consultant)

Avela Health is seeking a thoughtful and collaborative Psychiatrist with expertise in supporting autistic children, adolescents, and their families. In this role, you will provide consultation on psychopharmacology, including assessment of medication needs, recommendations for treatment options, and guidance on risks, benefits, and alternatives.

This role emphasizes a neurodiversity-affirming, family-centered approach, where recommendations respect the values and goals of each family. You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary, fully remote team to deliver flexible, evidence-based, and compassionate care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide consultation on psychopharmacologic options for autistic children and adolescents, including risks, benefits, and alternatives.
  • Support shared decision-making with families by offering clear, accessible information about medication strategies.
  • Collaborate with psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers, and coaches to ensure psychiatric recommendations are well-integrated into holistic care plans.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and case consultations, offering psychiatric expertise as needed.
  • Educate and support families and team members in understanding medication-related recommendations within a neurodiversity-affirming framework.
  • Monitor treatment response, safety, and progress; adjust pharmacologic intervention care plans as needed.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of child psychiatry, autism-related research, and psychopharmacology.

Qualifications

  • MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
  • Licensure (or eligibility for licensure) to practice psychiatry in New Jersey and/or eligible to be licensed in other states as needed.
  • Documented experience working with autistic individuals with a wide range of support needs.
  • Commitment to a neurodiversity-affirming, family-centered approach.
  • Proficiency in delivering psychiatric services via telehealth platforms.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills in a remote, team-based environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience integrating psychiatric care within behavioral health interventions (e.g., CBT, NDBI) 
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, fully remote healthcare environment.
