Frequently asked questions
Does insurance cover autism testing for South Carolina families?
Many insurance plans cover autism evaluations in South Carolina, but coverage depends on your specific plan and benefits. Avela Health verifies your insurance benefits before your first appointment so you’ll know what coverage to expect and what your estimated out-of-pocket cost may be
How long does an autism evaluation take?
An Avela Health evaluation takes approximately 4 weeks from the inital appointment to written report, across 2-3 video sessions. That’s compared to a national average wait of six to eighteen months just to get an appointment. There’s no waitlist to join before you start.
Your specific timeline depends on two things: how many visits your psychologist needs to get a full picture, and how quickly you’re able to complete the assessments they send between visits.
Does my child need a diagnosis to start therapy with Avela Health?
If your child or teen doesn’t yet have a diagnosis, we recommend starting with a diagnostic evaluation. Avela Health offers comprehensive, neurodiversity-affirming evaluations completed by doctoral-level psychologists. Many families move directly from their evaluation into the program, so you’re not starting over from scratch.

What does a typical week of therapy look like?
You and your child work with one licensed master’s or doctoral level provider — the same person, every session — over secure video from home. Sessions are built around what’s actually happening in your child’s life right now: the morning routine that’s falling apart, the after-school meltdowns, the social situations they’re avoiding. Frequency depends on your family’s needs, but the Avela FIT™ Kids is intentionally time-bound and targeted rather than open-ended. In between sessions, you’re applying what you’re learning in the real moments — because that’s where the progress happens.
Do you work with my child's school or IEP team?
Yes. Your child’s provider collaborates with their school, IEP team, and any other providers involved in their care — aligning strategies, sharing goals, and making sure what’s working at home translates to what’s happening in the classroom. One of the biggest burdens families carry is being the only person holding the full picture. We help close that gap so you’re not the one translating between every provider and every setting.
Where is Avela Health located?
Avela Health provides fully virtual care, so there’s no clinic commute or need to search for an autism evaluation nearby. Evaluations and therapy take place over secure video, making it easy for families throughout South Carolina to access care from home.
