Frequently asked questions
Are autism evaluations covered by insurance in Montana?
In many cases, yes. Montana law requires certain health insurance plans to cover the diagnosis and treatment of autism for covered children age 18 and younger. Coverage varies by plan, so Avela Health verifies your specific benefits before your first appointment, helping you understand what your plan covers and what costs to expect.
How long does an autism evaluation take?
An Avela Health evaluation takes approximately 4 weeks from the inital appointment to written report, across 2-3 video sessions. That’s compared to a national average wait of six to eighteen months just to get an appointment. There’s no waitlist to join before you start.
Your specific timeline depends on two things: how many visits your psychologist needs to get a full picture, and how quickly you’re able to complete the assessments they send between visits.
Does my child need a diagnosis to start therapy with Avela Health?
If your child or teen doesn’t yet have a diagnosis, we recommend starting with a diagnostic evaluation. Avela Health offers comprehensive, neurodiversity-affirming evaluations completed by doctoral-level psychologists. Many families move directly from their evaluation into the program, so you’re not starting over from scratch.

What does a typical week of therapy look like?
You and your child work with one licensed master’s or doctoral level provider — the same person, every session — over secure video from home. Sessions are built around what’s actually happening in your child’s life right now: the morning routine that’s falling apart, the after-school meltdowns, the social situations they’re avoiding. Frequency depends on your family’s needs, but the Avela FIT™ Kids is intentionally time-bound and targeted rather than open-ended. In between sessions, you’re applying what you’re learning in the real moments — because that’s where the progress happens.
Do you work with my child's school or IEP team?
Yes. Your child’s provider collaborates with their school, IEP team, and any other providers involved in their care — aligning strategies, sharing goals, and making sure what’s working at home translates to what’s happening in the classroom. One of the biggest burdens families carry is being the only person holding the full picture. We help close that gap so you’re not the one translating between every provider and every setting.
Where are Avela Health's clinics in Montana?
Avela Health brings evaluations and therapy directly to you through fully virtual care. There’s no clinic to travel to or need to search for an autism evaluation nearby. Appointments take place over secure video, so families can access care from home, wherever in Montana you call home.
